A visitor at Morgan County Correctional Complex, Cabrina Thomas, was arrested over the weekend after she was discovered with 2.05 oz of methamphetamine in one ounce of marijuana at a prison checkpoint. Thomas was booked into Morgan County Jail.
Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Kevin Davis was listed in stable condition Saturday evening after his vehicle was allegedly struck by a man trying to flee authorities at The Crab Orchard exit on Interstate 4 earlier in the day. The suspect was eventually shot by a State Trooper and was airlifted to a local hospital for treatment. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident.
Advocates say the USDA’s recent 25% SNAP benefit increased slated to go into effect in October will help more families struggling to stay afloat as unemployment benefits expire and the COVID-19 Delta variant continues to complicate economic recovery.
Heather Tater of the nonprofit group Bread for life said the SNAP benefits have been adjusted over the years to match inflation in the cost of living but have not increased to match changes in dietary guidelines and the higher costs associated with eating a healthy diet. Taylor says the extra monthly cash could increase a household’s ability to purchase fruits and vegetables. The ability to purchase healthy foods and not be relegated to high sodium canned goods or to pasta things that increase diabetes and blood sugar. She also says the increase will boost local economies through increased grocery store spending and help vulnerable residents such as older adults living on fixed incomes.
