MCSO deputy uninjured as suspect flees

Lett faces several charges following incident

A Morgan County Sheriff’s Office Deputy escaped serious injury Sunday following an incident on Morgan County Highway.

According to an MCSO report, officer Doug Garrett was checking on an unidentified male, later identified as 56-year-old Jospeh Spencer Lett of Heiskell. Lett was allegedly unresponsive and slumped over the steering wheel of a vehicle that was blocking a driveway at 1372 Morgan County Highway.

Garrett could smell alcohol coming from inside the vehicle and tried to secure the keys from the vehicle when Lett awoke and fled the scene, dragging Garrett alongside the vehicle.

Garrett eventually made his way to his vehicle and a pursuit ensued. The report states, Lett was driving on both sides of the road, forcing other motorists off the road.

Lett eventually drove into a ditch causing a flat tire, but he continued onto Highway 328 for approximately three miles before a mechanical issue forced him to stop.

Lett faces several charges in connection with the incident including assault, reckless endangerment and DUI.

Lett’s bond was set at $17,500.
