A 35-year-old Morgan County man, Derrick Allen Brooks, was arrested Sunday night and faces a total of 20 charges related to an alleged string of weekend burglaries and a high speed chase in the Coalfield area.
According to a Morgan County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) report, Brooks was driving a motorcycle Sunday night on Knoxville Highway when MCSO deputies attempted to pull over the vehicle for not having a taillight. Brooks allegedly tried to elude law enforcement and a high speed chase followed.
The motorcycle eventually crashed at 103 Farr Lane and Brooks fled on foot, but was soon taken into custody after a struggle.
Brooks allegedly had a pistol in his belt line and upon a search of his possessions, several other weapons were discovered. The pistol was confirmed as stolen.
Also discovered were three syringes along with what was believed to be liquid heroin.
When Brooks was arrested, he allegedly had stolen items in his possession. One item was from a burglary believed to have occurred Sunday on Brock Road near Sunbright. Items reported stolen at the residence included $25,000 in cash, a men’s gold watch and ring, and 10 silver dollars and 10 half dollars.
Brooks had the gold watch in his possession.
Another home was burglarized Sunday on Brock Road with items reported stolen including a crossbow, metal detector and a 30-30 rifle.
A gray van was reportedly seen in the area that morning matching the description of a van that had been reported stolen from the Coalfield area on Sunday as well along with items such as a 32-inch flat screen TV, a gun cabinet and various tools.
An MCSO report states Brooks told officers where the van was located and it was recovered at the address given.
Brooks’ bond was set at $111,000.
