Chief Deputy Steve Cochran says the gun has been confiscated and the man faces charges.

“Johnny Swint came into the courthouse a little bit ago. He had a handgun in his back pocket. The metal detector that they walk through went off. Officer Steve Fann, who’s a court security officer arrested him, also he had a couple of knives on this as well, arrested him, brought over here to the sheriff’s office and we gave him a receipt for his gun and Officer Fann took him to jail.”

Cochran says he believes Swint was going to visit one of the offices in the courthouse but does not know what his business was. Swint told police that he forgot he had the gun in his pocket.

It is illegal to carry a weapon into the courthouse.

COCHRAN: “Number one, he didn’t have a handgun carry permit for it so that right there was in violation. It was loaded; one in the chamber and full magazine in the gun. It is posted at the courthouse that you are not allowed to carry any type of weapon into the courthouse.”

Cochran says the exact charges will be determined after a background check is completed on Johnny Swint.

John Mullinix one of the event organizers has the details.

MULLINIX: “We’ve got the 278th Tennessee Army National Guard Unit here in Fentress County, they have a bike group and they are going to be leading the bike ride. It’s going to be on May 25th. We’re going to start out on the courthouse lawn in Jamestown. We’re going to have a wreath laying ceremony and take a little time and honor the war dead of Fentress County, have prayer time and then at 12 noon we’ll be starting the bikes.”

Mullinix goes on to talk about the route for the ride.

MULLINIX: “We’ll be going down 127S, hit 62, go over to Morgan County and hit 27 up to Oneida. Then we’ll come across the gorge. We’re gonna take a little detour down the the Sgt. York homeplace and then back to the square at 5 p.m.”

There will be bluegrass music and a cookout once the riders get back to Jamestown. There is a $20 registration fee per bike. Passengers ride free. If you need more information please call (931) 879-8164.

The Unicorn Fund has a special event coming up in June but Shelby Melhorn wants folks to commit now to help with a worthy cause.

MELHORN: “It’s called Rock A Thon Talent Show. We will let people rock and listen to the talent that’s being presented. Playing the guitar, singing, just different things; it can be any kind of a talent that you want to do.”

There will be two age categories for the talent show and prizes will be awarded to winner in the talent competition and who rock the longest.

MELHORN: “We’ll have first, second and third prize for 12 and under and also for the adults. And we’ll also have prizes for the person who raises the most money for their rocking. They get sponsors for their rocking and for the one who rocks the longest. Last year, one lady rocked, must have been five or six hours and she won the prize.”

Shelby says money raised from the event will go to help people in our area.

MELHORN: “Mainly for our scholarships. As most everyone knows we give scholarships to all of the high schools in Morgan and Scott counties.”

For more information about the talent show and rock a thon, you can call 346-7035. Melhorn says those participating in the rock a thon are encouraged to bring their own rocking chair.

Ken Yager and State Rep. John Mark Windle. Their purpose was to present a check to the Morgan County Archives Committee.

Hargett says, “This is one of 20 archival grants we’re able to make throughout the state and this money will be used to help enhance the preservation of the archival materials here. I anticipate they will be using for the supplies necessary to make sure that we take care of these important documents for Morgan County.”

Rep. John Mark Windle says he was pleased to be able to support the effort to bring the money to Morgan County.

“History is so important to each of us – our personal history as well as the history of our neighbors. I don’t think you can overstate how important it is to make sure we have a repository that is safe for our records. I just want to thank, not only the secretary of state, but also the people of Morgan County who have worked so hard to put this together because somebody had to do the work,” says Rep. Windle.

Sen. Ken Yager echoes Windle’s thoughts.

“The grant that Secretary Hargett presented today is one of the larger grants that he has presented which I think reflects on the work that we’re doing here in Morgan County to protect our archives.”

Jean Pollard, Morgan County Historian who serves on the Archives Committee, says the money will be put to good use.

“This is just the first of many steps that we’re looking for in the future in seeing all these records being restored and filed where people can use it. Lisa Rutherford prepared the grant for us and we would not have had this without her and her knowledge and skills of how to do it.”

Life Care Center of Morgan has special activities going on all week long as does Harriman Care and Rehab in Roane County.

Kelly Bilyeu is the activities director of Life Care Center of Morgan County. She talks about what will be going on at Life Care today.

“We’re going to be doing a football theme and the theme is tailgate party. We’re going to do field goal kicks, some football tossing. We’re going to have a tailgate party in the afternoon for the staff and residents. We’re going to have all kinds of finger foods. We’re going to play cornhole, ladder ball and other tailgate games you would see if you were going to a tailgate party at the University of Tennessee.”

Rose Meza from Harriman Care and Rehab says three Roane County facilities are coming together today for a joint the celebration.

“The three Roane County facilities get together and we do a group picnic over at Roane County Park. We take the huge pavilion. They bring in all kinds of cookers and food. We have live music, games and prizes. It’s just a good time for everybody to get together. The residents all like meeting new people. The staff all gets together and has a good time. That lasts all day.”
