Plateau Electric Cooperative will have its annual board election tomorrow. All members are invited to vote for a candidate. Here are the names on the ballot:

Scott County Inside Oneida:

Brian Boyatt
Steve Lambert
Hillard Mattie
Bobby Lee Smith

Scott County Outside Oneida:

Trent W. Cross, MD
Bill Hall

Morgan County:

Vic Davis
Billy Durham

Jacob Billingsly of PEC says that voting is easy for members.

“Any member in the Plateau Electric service territory can come to either of our office locations,” Billingsly said.

“If you’re in Scott County, come to our warehouse behind the building. If you’re in Morgan County it will be in (at the warehouse) where we park our trucks.”

Voting booths will be set up at these locations. The vote will take place between 9am and 4pm. Listen to WECO news early Monday morning to hear the results.

This Saturday, the Obed Wild and Scenic River will have its annual clean-up day and volunteer appreciation lunch. Those wishing to volunteer should bring water, insect repellent, sun block and should wear sturdy shoes. The cleanup will start at 8:30am with a sign up at the Obed Visitor Center in Wartburg. At noon, anyone who has volunteered for the Obed is invited to the visitor center for an appreciation lunch. Call the park at 346-6294 for more information.

Next Monday, the Morgan County Budget Committee will meet at 6pm. The location of the meeting has been changed. The meeting was originally scheduled to take place at the Morgan County School’s Central Office, but will now take place in the 3rd Floor Courtroom of the Morgan County Courthouse.

Next Tuesday, the Morgan County Building Committee will meet at 5pm in the 2nd Floor Courtroom of the Courthouse. The public is encouraged to attend these meetings.

WECO’s signature event, The Outdoor Show has officially been scheduled. This is the 24th year that the event will be held. The date is set for July 21st for the Courthouse Square in Wartburg. The event will feature a food court, live entertainment, a singing competition, vendor booths and more. Those interested in obtaining a booth for the show can call WECO General Manager Ed Knight at 346-3900. More information about the event will be released between now and the show date.

In Sports, Morgan County will be a host to a softball substate game tonight, when North Greene makes the trip to Coalfield to take on the Yellow Jackets. The winner of tonight’s game will advance to the Spring Fling in Murfreesboro. First pitch for that game is scheduled for 5:30. In baseball, another area team isn’t as lucky, as Rockwood will actually have to travel to North Greene tonight for a chance at Spring Fling. First pitch is scheduled for 7pm.

And finally, texting is a wonderful technology, but it can also get you into trouble. Two women face possible charges after authorities say a text message seeking the illegal purchase of alcohol was mistakenly sent to an Alaska State Trooper. The trooper responded to the texts and arranged a meeting. Authorities say the woman who sent the texts and another alleged buyer showed up to the meeting. So did the trooper, in uniform. Alcohol sales are barred in Bethel, Alaska, because no one has been cleared to sell it in the community. Both women face possible misdemeanor charges.

“They had a food drive,” Mayton said. “We were just blessed that this came from Roane County.”

While WECO was there, an exact number of donated items was handed to Mary Simpson of Storehouse .

“I just got a list here that told us how many items we got,” Mary said reading from the small sheet of paper. “Wow, 3,162 food items… wow, God is good.”

Storehouse Ministries is now in need of boxes to help distribute the food. If you have empty boxes that you would like to donate, you can leave them on the covered porch at Storehouse Ministries, on Main Street in Wartburg, or call 346-6286.

Next Tuesday, the Morgan County Building Committee will meet at 5pm in the 2nd Floor Courtroom of the Morgan County Courthouse. The public is encouraged to attend these meetings.

Those interested in obtaining a booth for the show can call WECO General Manager Ed Knight at 346-3900. More information about the event will be released between now and the show date.

In Sports, a Region 2-A championship was brought to Morgan County last night after Coalfield defeated Grace Christian in softball 7-0. Coalfield will now host North Greene in a sub-state game this Friday at 7pm. Grace Christian will now hit the road to Johnson City to take on University School. In baseball, Grace Christian defeated Rockwood 11-0 to earn the regional title. Grace will host Unaka Friday at 6, and Rockwood will have to travel to North Greene.

Also in sports, a game time has been set for the University of Tennessee football team’s opening game with North Carolina State. That game will kick off Friday, August 31st at 7:30. And in case you were wondering, that game is now only 106 days away.

And finally, if given the opportunity, would you deceive a crook? In Washington state, a homeowner who’d awoken to the sounds of a burglary in progress yelled out, “Get out! I have a gun!” The burglar replied “Yes, sir!” and fled, leaving a lot of the loot behind. That afternoon, the burglar called and said he would return the stolen goods if the homeowner would return his left-behind property — including his identification — and not call the police. But when the burglar turned up to carry out the transaction, the cops were waiting.

Dr. Penny Boyd, principal of Sunbright School thinks field day is important.

“We like to reward students at the end of the year for a great year of hard work and effort,” she stated.

Assistant Principal Dr. Joe Miller says that a lot of area businesses and organizations were even involved.

“We’ve had a lot of donations from different companies such as Hardees of Wartburg, Morgan Pro Hardware, Tiger Food Mart and our rescue and volunteer personnel volunteered their valuable time among other things,” Dr. Miller explained.

The fire department, the Army National Guard, and area police departments were among those involved. The school year officially ends with a half day next Wednesday.

Next Tuesday, the Morgan County Building Committee will meet at 5pm in the 2nd Floor Courtroom of the Morgan County Courthouse. The public is encouraged to attend these meetings.

In Sports, the region 2-A baseball and softball tournaments finally got underway yesterday. In baseball, Grace Christian shut out Oneida 11-0 and Rockwood got by Oliver Springs 4-3. Rockwood will now play at Grace Christian today 6pm for the region championship. In softball, Oliver Springs was defeated by Grace Christian 4-0 and Coalfield shutout Midway 4-0. Coalfield will now have to travel to Grace Christian today at 6 for a chance at the region 2-A crown.

Also in sports, former University of Tennessee player and head football coach Phillip Fulmer has been named to the College Football Hall of Fame. Fulmer was named to the 2012 class during a ceremony in New York yesterday. Fulmer ended his career at UT with a record of 152-52, and was the winningest coach in major college football with at least 10 years experience. Induction into the hall will take place on December 4th at the 55th National Football Foundation Awards Dinner.

And finally, if your friend asked you to shoot him in the leg, would you? Police in New York state said they arrested a man accused of agreeing to do a favor for a friend. They say Shawn Mossow allegedly shot a 24-year-old friend in the leg with a .22-caliber rifle Sunday (in Stockholm) because the other man was curious about what it would feel like and asked him to take the shot. The victim was treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and is expected to fully recover.
